Magazine Cover

Divers entering Sulawesi from North Sulawesi's Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manado can now pick up a free copy of "What's Happening" magazine with cover photo from Gorontalo. Inside is an article by marine photojournalist Stephen Wong of Hongkong with photos he took underwater here. The cover photo shows one of Gorontalo's unique Salvador Dali sponges. In addition to its surrealisticly carved surface, this particular sponge has double vases. Salvador Dali sponges grow to over two meters.

Serene & Exciting

So far this week, guests diving in Gorontalo have had some exciting opportunities. On the serene side was the graceful Spotted eagle ray slowly winging by the first cave at Shadowlands and the elegant Lemon sea pen protruding from the sand at Swirling Steps. On the exciting end was the twenty large Smallscale scorpionfish lounging on the fantastic coral of Traffic Jam. Then the school of large Yellowfin tuna,, weighing in the 30 to 40 kilo range, in a feeding frenzy. What will the rest of the week bring?

What Will be Next?

Our wide mix of guests this past week was able to see Gorontalo's ever-growing list of new, endemic, or undescribed species of marine life. Two of them were able to photograph the new endemic Togean dottyback that perhaps only five photographers worldwide have shot. They also photographed a commensal coral shrimp that we think is the newly discovered, undescribed one found only in northern Sulawesi. Miguel's Diving staff can't wait to see the photos! Also just this week we discovered the water under our dock is full of cute pipefish with orange fantails. This fish does not appear in any book, so Miguel's Diving staff is wondering what else will turn up this dive season.
